195 Best Indian Bikes for Short Guys

A list of 9 current Indian bikes/motorcycles which are easy to ride for a short guy..

A common and pertinent concern among Indians guy who are not blessed with a good height, looking for a motorcycle would be:

Will I be able to handle the bike comfortably?” or “Will the seat height be too high for my legs?”

Being around 5 ft 4 - 5 ft 5 inches in height, I can perfectly understand this concern. Things to look out in a bike for a short rider

    1. A low seat height
    2. A seat which narrows/tapers towards the front
    3. A manageable Kerb (with petrol + engine oil) weight of the bike

Compiled below is a list (from my own riding experience) of currently available Indian bikes/motorcycles which short guys would find comfortable to ride. Interestingly nearly all the bikes listed below have a seat height of less than 800 mm (most fall around the 790 mm mark).

A low seat height is very obvious but a seat which narrows towards the front is also very important for short legs. A wide seat makes the legs to bend/curve, which makes matters worse for short legs which try to get a firm footing on the ground. A narrow/tapered seat towards the front lets short legs reach terra firma with a less curvature.

Most Indian motorcycles have a seat height of around 800 mm. Therefore mostly it is the width of the seat which determines how comfortably a short guy would be able to ride the bike.

1. Hero Honda Splendor (Seat height - 775 mm, Kerb Weight – 112 kgs):

The Splendor is the easiest motorcycle to ride for a short Indian guy. Along with a low seat height, the seat is also narrow towards the front and the bike has a kerb weight of just 112 Kgs.

Interestingly the Passion which is just a Splendor with different body work has a slightly higher seat and a broader seat, which doesn’t make the Passion uncomfortable for the shorter guy but certainly not as easy as the Splendor.

2. Hero Honda Super Splendor ( Seat height - 775 mm , Kerb weight - 121 Kgs):

The Super Splendor also has a narrow seat plus a low seat height and a light Kerb weight.

Also like the Splendor and Passion, the Glamour which is essentially the Super Splendor with different body work has a higher and wider seat.

3. Bajaj Avenger ( Seat height - 710 mm , Kerb weight - 155 Kgs):

The Avenger has the lowest seat height (710 mm) among made in India bikes, making it a small guys delight.

Just that its kerb weight of 155 kgs is comparatively slightly on the higher side.

4. Bajaj Pulsar 135LS ( Seat height - 800 mm , Kerb weight - 122 Kgs):

The Pulsar 135LS has a seat height of 800 mm but it has a seat which narrows quite nicely at the front.

A light weight body of 122 kgs also makes it easy for short legs.

5. TVS Apache RTR 160 ( Seat height - 790 mm , Kerb weight - 136 Kgs):

The TVS Apache RTR 160 sometimes gets the flak for being too compact for bigger guys.

But then the Apache RTR 160 fits like a glove for someone like me.

6. TVS Apache RTR 180 ( Seat height - 790 mm , Kerb weight - 137 Kgs):

The TVS Apache RTR 180 has an identical seat height as the Apache RTR 160 and just gets 1 kg increment over its kerb weight.

This makes it almost the same as the Apache RTR 160 in size and weight.

7. Yamaha R15 ( Seat height - 790 mm , Kerb weight - 131 Kgs):

Like the TVS Apache RTR, the Yamaha R15 is also a compact and light weight package.

Which makes riding it an easy affair for not so tall Indian guys.

8. Yamaha FZ16/S ( Seat height - 790 mm , Kerb weight - 135 Kgs):

The FZ with its puffed up body panels might appear all beefy, heavy and masculine. But in reality it is a very cleverly designed bike from Yamaha.

At 135 Kg kerb weight, the bike is relatively light and has a pretty manageable seat height of 790 mm.

9. Kawasaki Ninja 250R ( Seat height - 790 mm , Kerb weight - 172 Kgs):

The Ninja 250R was a sweet surprise for me. Kawasaki had done a research in the US (where the Ninja 250R has been the best selling bike since a long time) where it had found that quite a sizeable chunk of the Ninja 250R buyers comprised of ladies.

Therefore it was deliberate that the Ninja 250R was designed specifically keeping the ladies in mind. The Ninja 250R therefore gets a seat height of not just 790 mm but also a seat which narrows nicely towards the front; making the baby Ninja 250R a ream come true for vertically challenged riders.

But at 172 Kgs kerb weight, the Ninja 250R does deserves some respect. Despite the weight I have found the Ninja 250R easier to ride and maneuver than my Pulsar 220.

I hope that the above list helps guys looking for an Indian motorcycle suitable for short guys.

very good article..

Great to see some of the finest motorcyles are there in the list. It is true that guys who are not blessed with a good height can look out for these motorcyles. But I feel its unfair to come up with a list of bikes for them.

Bony said...

my friend rides r15 and i have sat behind many times. i feel his bikes seat is not that comfortable, and so i want a bike which also has a very comfortable seat. can u suggest any?

Payeng said...

@Sanket, thanks dude

@Shaiju, belive me bro.. guys like "me" seach for such info
:-)

@Bony

Difficult to answer your query dude.. as I am mostly found on the rider's seat and not as pillion. By the way if you are getting a bike for yourself (which I guess you will ride), why be so concerened about Pillion comfort. Unless of course you need to care for your Girlfriend.

Pavan said...

Nice post. This will help short guys for sure. All types of bikes which suits short guys have been posted here.

Anonymous said...

Discover should have included here.

Karthikeyan Palani said...

Payeng always comes up with innovative and useful articles like these which cannot be found anywhere else in the web :) Great going.

Anonymous said...

Hey I've researching for a month and this is the most relevant article I came across. I am 5'4" and 58kgs in weight. Some of the bikes here exceed my budget. So, can you give a little perspective on CB Shine vs Discover 150cc. I am assuming they'd be suitable for my profile, and really dont want to go for a Hero Honda.
Thanks.

Payeng said...

@Romil,

both the CB Twister and the Discover 150 should not be too diffuclt for you to ride. The CB Shine has a slightly wider seat at the front though..

why don't you check out and if possible let us know

Anonymous said...

I'm 5'3"/160cm in height, would FZ16 fit my height?

Payeng said...

@above,

I think the FZ should fit.. but nothing better like checking it out yourself

Anonymous said...

Why don't you run down on the bikes for taller guys... I'm around 6.

Anonymous said...

That 790 mm is the standard seat height for indian bikes. Even suzuki gs150r seat height is 790 mm, but dry weight is 134 kg and kerb weight with full tank fuel is 149 kg.

Sam said...

@Shaiju:
Not sure who you think the article is being unfair to. US motorcycle magazines always point out seat height and whatnot when reviewing motorcycles, so people will know what they will be facing if they buy the bike (Payeng probably won't be in the market for a KTM Adventure 990 Dakar anytime soon with its 880mm seat, even if he gets the money).

Payeng, it might not be a bad idea to follow this up with an article that points out some of the bikes to avoid as well.

Anonymous said...

hey guys wat about honda stunner ?

Anonymous said...

i,m still in confussion to choose the hero splendor plus or discover 135 or honda stunner...... but for me i like to get discover or stunner for looks as well as very good decent mileage...

Payeng said...

@Above,

Lhe lowest seat height from your selected models would be the Splendor+ followed by Discover 100/125/150 (135 has been stopped some time back) and then the Stunner

Vishnu said...

Wha about hero cd deluxe.. It got gud milege than the splendor pair

Payeng said...

@Vishnu, I am not sure about the mileage but yes, the CD Deluxe has also got a fairly low seat

Anonymous said...

So for riders havin more than 5' 10" height, Hero Honda CBZ XTREME n Karizma ZMR r the only options? What about Yamaha FZ-S?

Anonymous said...

hi, iam 5.4 feet height, yamaha SZR will suit for me, or do we have seat height adjustment in SZR,

Payeng said...

@Above,

the SZ-R could be slightly tall for you since it's got a wide seat.. but then a lot depends on the length of your legs with respect to the rest of your body.

Anonymous said...

Hi, I'm 5'11". Which would suit me the best, Honda CBR250R, Hero Honda Karizma ZMR or Yamaha FZ-S? Thanks!!

nik said...

i am 5.5 feet i want to know that enfield suit me.............

Payeng said...

@Nik,

According to me to be comfortable on an Enfield bike at your height you would need to modify/replace the stock seat with the seat of the Royal Enfield Thunderbird.

trickhood said...

my height is 5.4'.can i ride fz 16?

Payeng said...

@Somesh,

Yes you will be able to ride the FZ16, it just looks bulky but it is very easy to ride as the bike is majorly puffed up plastic panels and it has a pretty low seat

Anonymous said...

@Krrish, at your height I think the Avenger or the Enticer (currently discontinued) will suit

@Anon (above), you should be able to ride the 200 Duke, but probably with a little bit of effort

Dear biker, next door! Congrats a lot for such a wonderful article. This is the one which mostly satisfies the never ending query of the short height bike lovers.........some of the the experts says, its not the height, but the riding skill and confidence that matters more for riding a two wheeler.Now can you please listen to my single query and give me a clear answer?

You have prescribed many visitors that " Do check yourself whether it is manageable for you or not." now my question is how to understand whether a particular bike is suitable for a short height person or not?

My personal experience is that i am 5 feet 2/3 inches short guy, and i did ride splendor, passion, Rx-135, Discover, Pulsar 150 and CBZ extreme...now while driving, its quite okay for me to drive any of it, and i neither met any accident till date. So how to understand it? Now, i am planning to buy Pulsar 135. obviously it is little higher bike, but i tried sitting upon it once. I found, i can rest one foot completely on the ground while the other rests on footrest. if i try land both legs in the ground, neither sole completely touches the ground. Is now, my question is, if i can put one foot comfortably and firmly upon ground, can i consider this particular bike suitable for me? please suggest..........thank you

Anonymous said...

Hi i am 5'1" i was planning to go for ktm duke 200. So can you suggest me whether there will be any problem with the height issue as the seat seem to be little low or high.

Anonymous said...

Hii,i am 5'2" i was planning to go for ktm duke 200.can i ride the bike? and the ktm duke 200 seat height can be adjustable?kindly, plz rply as soon as possible.

Payeng said...

at 5.1 ft - 5.2 ft the seat of the 200 Duke might be a bit tall.

But then there are differences in the way a person is built.. some guys hav comparatively longer legs than the torso compared to others.. therefore only checking out the bike personally can one e completely sure

Hi Dear S.P Biker,

I am confused between Royal Enfield Classic 350 & Thunderbird. I am 167 CM height with 70 KG weight. I can comfortably ride Karizmas and Pulsars including 220. For the last 5 years I am with Karizma and feeling no problem regarding height. My doubt is out of this two beasts from RE stable which one suits my look. Apache RTR and Pulsar 200 are the most suitable bikes for me in looks currently. Do RE suits me?

Hi, Nice article. I was thinking of a buying a bike, but resisted because I thought I was short (5 feet 2 inch). Once I drove Honda Shine, but it was very uncomfortable. and now I am working in Hill areas in Himachal Pradesh, specially my work revolves in high altitude bed roads of Lahaul and Spiti district (above 9000 feet). I am a bit confused about selecting a bike between Bajaj Avenger and TVS Apache 160. In these Hill roads, I think Bajaj Avenger will be good for me, but I want expert opinion from you :). This will help me a lot. I am thinking of buying one by August, 2012. Thanks.

Payeng said...

@Evil Sharma,

At 5'2 you would need to lower the seat height if the Royal Enfield 350.

[1] You can do that by replacing the stock seat with that of the Thunderbird.

[2] Also replacing the stock 19" wheels by the 18" wheels from the Classic would reduce the seat height by that slight amount.

Anonymous said...

I think it's unfair to put up a list of bikes for short guys,sure you have put up some of the finest bikes,but once you learn to ride whatever bike, it doesn't become much of an issue.I am 5 foot 6' and i ride a 1987 royal enfield bullet and that too with the electra seat never faced any problems. But guys you would have to get a lot of experience especially parking....

JEMZ said...

@ angelesia
Hi,
Eventhough there is controversy about, rider's height and driving skills, according to me, height matters to some considerable extent. If u use only main road or well maintained roads for traffic u can comfortably ride if u can just touch the road with mere feet tip atleast. But sometimes, if u want to ride off road, specially in some villages etc, ofcourse ur height and strength matters when handling the bike, ie, if u could touch both feet firmly over the ground, you will be confident enough to ride over some rock etc (If u have to slow and proceed or to avoid certain obstacles ..). Also when u r in traffic in a town with a pillion lady who is sitting in side, it will be easier for you to maintain balance with both feet comfortably on ground, specially if she likes turning here and there while waiting for the signal... Thanx..

Interesting article. I came across this problem in the process of teaching my wife how to ride my Pulsar 150.
Like many of those here, shes a bit over 5'3. Though she finds it difficult to keep both her legs on the ground while at a standstill , one foot on the ground and one on the foot peg works fine for her.
She finds it a bit daunting to kickstart, but has no problems balancing the bike ,even with me sitting behind.
So its all about technique.

Hi sir, my height is 5ft.
I hve a plan to tke a bike.
I has options like: pulsar200NS, yamaha FAZER and yamaha R15.
Plz advice me.

Payeng said...

@all, it would not be accurate to give answers to your question just based on your height measurements.. as the length of the legs in relation to the body is important here.

Nevertheless I think for a guy with mininum 5 ft would be easily able to ride the Avenger. Others with 5.2 ft and above should be able to ride the models posted above.

I will try if I can update the above list with current models

Thanks

Hi,

Plz suggest :)

Suhas Dwarakanath said...

Aman,
Please do not follow the sheep syndrome and go for an RE: I have driven RE and Avanger equally and amid comparable roadconditions: Avenger wins.
No ego here (bcos I have an RX 100) so for long-distance cruising, Avenger fits quite nicely
